UNM students recognized with awards at AIChE national meeting

The University of New Mexico (UNM) recently celebrated the achievements of two students from its Nanomedicine Lab, Caleb Dang and Chuzube Edeh. Both were recognized at the 2023 AIChE Annual Meeting with presentation awards.


Los Alamos saves $11 million and reduces carbon emissions with excavated dirt reuse

Los Alamos National Laboratory has announced a saving of $11.7 million through the repurposing of soil excavated on-site for new construction foundations, roads, and utility and stormwater lines. The laboratory's recent collaborative initiative is proving to be a cost-effective solution, with on-site processing of engineered fill costing approximately $13 per cubic yard, in contrast to purchasing it from a vendor at around $247 per cubic yard.


Study reveals nonprofit arts sector's $271 million economic impact in Albuquerque

The city of Albuquerque has unveiled the results of a study called Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), conducted by Americans for the Arts. The study found that in 2022, Albuquerque's nonprofit arts and culture sector contributed $270.7 million to the local economy.

Vexus Fiber launches first phase of high-speed broadband in Albuquerque

The city of Albuquerque has announced the commencement of Vexus Fiber's high-speed, fiber-to-the-home internet service in select areas. The initial locations include neighborhoods housing over 1,000 homes and businesses situated north of I-40 and west of I-25. This marks the beginning of Phase 1 in Vexus Fiber's rollout of its high-speed fiber broadband network in the city.

UNM graduate student honored with DOE research award

The University of New Mexico (UNM) has announced that Stephen Porter, a graduate student in the Nanoscience and Microsystems Engineering Program, is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research Award. Porter's current research involves analyzing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of heterogeneous catalysts and studying the oxidation mechanisms within a PdPt system.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) has announced that Advance at UNM is conducting a comprehensive climate survey. The objective of this survey is to augment programs for recruiting, retaining, and supporting faculty members. The results, which are expected to be available in the fall, will provide insights into faculty well-being in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
