The University of New Mexico College of Nursing celebrates the achievements of its nursing graduates who are on the trajectory to achieving their goals and becoming valuable members of the healthcare community, locally and beyond. Some graduates demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and innovation in nursing education and scholarship and are honored with the Summer 2024 College of Nursing awards. These awards recognize the dedication and skill within the College, and its commitment to making a difference in the healthcare of New Mexico’s communities.

UNM alums donate $252K for nurse scholarships and rural workforce
The University of New Mexico Foundation has announced a donation of $252,500 from UNM alumni and philanthropists Arishanda and Doug Campbell. This contribution will enhance nurse residency scholarships at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) and support the nursing workforce in rural New Mexico through the UNM College of Nursing.

UNM Hospital hosts community listening session focusing on language access
The University of New Mexico Hospital will hold a Community Listening Session on Monday, August 26, at the Albuquerque International District Library. This event provides Bernalillo County District 3 residents the chance to share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions with hospital representatives as they prepare for the upcoming vote on the extension of the UNM Hospital mill levy this November.

UNM Hospital announces wage increases amid ongoing union negotiations
The University of New Mexico Hospital has announced a 3 percent wage increase for its employees at the Lomas Blvd. campus, its clinics, and many employees at the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC). This raise is made possible due to newly increased Medicaid reimbursement, supported by the New Mexico Health Care Authority.

New Mexico faces ongoing public health concerns over obstetric deserts
For women living in rural parts of New Mexico, access to obstetric and gynecological (OB-GYN) care is often limited. Obstetric care, which involves the treatment of pregnant women including child delivery, is a particularly limited service in the state. So much so, that parts of New Mexico are referred to as “OB deserts.” It’s an issue that The University of New Mexico’s College of Population Health (COPH) is trying to help solve.

UNM welcomes Rosario Medina as new Dean
Rosario Medina, PhD, FNP-BC, ACNP, CNS, FAANP, FAAN began her tenure as the 12th dean of The University of New Mexico College of Nursing on June 3, 2024. She brings more than 43 years of active nursing experience and decades of academic leadership to the role. Just over two months into her role, Medina already has significant plans to grow the College and its reach across New Mexico.
