The University of New Mexico Hospital and UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) have been recognized among the top hospitals in the nation for specific clinical care areas, according to recent ratings by U.S. News & World Report.
UNM Hospital received high-performance ratings in several areas including colon cancer surgery, heart attack, heart failure, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and stroke. Additionally, it was awarded a medallion as a “Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access.”
“I am extremely proud of our teams who are providing high quality and compassionate care to our patients every day. These ratings demonstrate our strong commitment to safety, quality, and improving health equity. New Mexicans can be confident that when they come to our hospital for care, they will be cared for by teams of people who have their highest level of safety in mind,” said Kate Becker, CEO of UNM Hospital.
SRMC was rated as a high-performing hospital in diabetes care. This designation is significant given that 12.3 percent of New Mexico’s population has a diabetes diagnosis, with an additional 53,000 residents unaware they have the condition according to a 2023 report by the American Diabetes Association.
“Many of our patients at SRMC come from rural and Tribal areas of the state where diabetes and diseases linked to diabetes are prevalent. I’m proud of our teams who are providing this care and working to make Sandoval County and surrounding areas healthier. We have an important mission to improve access to care and equity in health outcomes and ratings like these prove that we are working to achieve that goal every day,” stated Jamie Silva-Steele, President of UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center.
These accolades follow other recent awards for UNM Health System hospitals. Earlier this year, UNM Hospital received recognition from Healthgrades for excellence in cranial neurosurgery as well as five-star ratings for treatment of gastrointestinal bleed and respiratory failure.
Furthermore, SRMC was ranked by the Lown Institute Hospital Index as one of the top five hospitals in the U.S. for social responsibility out of more than 2,700 acute care hospitals nationwide. The index also placed SRMC among the top five percent nationally with Honor Roll status across categories such as social responsibility, health equity, value of care, and patient outcomes.
