Deb Haaland, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and current political figure in New Mexico, has made several public statements regarding her gubernatorial ambitions and policy priorities on social media. In a series of posts published on December 15 and 16, 2025, Haaland highlighted her leadership experience, support for healthcare workers’ education, and plans to expand child care access in New Mexico.
On December 15, Haaland stated her intention to run for governor: "I’m ready to bring my leadership experience to the governor’s office and change the game for our families.
For years, Pete and I worked side by side. I’m grateful for his friendship and honored to have his endorsement."
The following day, she addressed issues related to nursing education: "There’s no question that nursing is a professional degree — and it should be treated like one. Accessible healthcare in New Mexico means we must make the education our nurses and healthcare workers need affordable and within reach.
I’ll work to ensure New Mexico keeps supporting" (December 16).
Later that same day, Haaland discussed early childhood initiatives: "New Mexico is leading the charge as the first state to make free child care universal. That means lower costs for families, stronger small businesses, and a growing workforce and economy.
Now it’s time to build on this work. We will hire thousands of child care workers and build" (December 16).
Haaland's remarks come as New Mexico continues its efforts to address workforce shortages in healthcare fields such as nursing by improving educational access. The state also recently implemented policies making universal free child care available to all residents—a first in the nation—aimed at reducing family expenses while supporting economic growth through increased workforce participation.
Haaland previously served as Secretary of the Interior under President Joe Biden before returning to focus on state-level leadership in New Mexico.
