Scott Woodard has built a long career in collegiate athletics, beginning as a student at Western New Mexico University (WNMU) where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology and played on the baseball team. As an athlete, he contributed to the team's first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship and was twice named First Team All-Conference shortstop.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Woodard stayed at WNMU to pursue a Master of Arts in School Administration while serving as assistant coach. During this period, he helped lead the team to third place nationally and narrowly missed advancing to the NAIA World Series.
Woodard later coached at Tularosa and Deming High Schools before returning to Silver City in 1992 to become head baseball coach for WNMU. In 1993, he joined as Assistant Athletics Director under Dick Dragmiester and eventually took over as Athletics Director after Dragmiester's retirement.
In his 15 years as Athletics Director, Woodard oversaw several major projects. These included constructing the softball field, renovating basketball facilities, building Altamirano Football Stadium and the Fox Complex—which houses locker rooms and weight room—and developing three tennis courts that allowed WNMU to host home matches. He also supervised improvements at Scott Park Golf Course with new training areas and facilities.
Woodard held numerous roles within the department including sports information, game management, compliance, and eligibility. His tenure spanned more than half his life at WNMU.
After leaving WNMU, Woodard worked as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Arizona State University from 2011 to 2013. The Sun Devils made back-to-back Women's College World Series appearances during his time there. He then moved to Auburn University for five years (2013–2017), where the team achieved consecutive 40-plus win seasons and reached the WCWS Finals in 2016; he also helped develop multiple All-SEC players.
He later served on staff at University of Alabama – Birmingham (UAB) with responsibilities focused on hitting instruction and recruiting. Currently, Woodard is fielding coach for Texas State University Bobcats. Under his guidance, Texas State secured Sun Belt Tournament titles in both 2024 and 2025 regular seasons. The coaching staff received recognition as NCAA Division I South Region Coaching Staff of the Year following their second straight NCAA tournament appearance in 2024.
As of 2026, Woodard will be entering his fifth season with Texas State's coaching staff.
Woodard was inducted into the Western New Mexico University Hall of Fame in September 2017.
