Western New Mexico falls to CSU Pueblo in road basketball matchup

Western New Mexico University's women's basketball team was defeated by Colorado State University Pueblo with a score of 84-34 at Massari Arena in Pueblo, Colorado.

The Mustangs faced difficulties early in the game, falling behind due to turnovers and missed scoring opportunities. Angelina Khalaf broke an initial scoring drought for Western New Mexico with a layup assisted by Brelee Nichols. Despite late baskets from Naomi Kimble, the team ended the first quarter trailing 19–6.

In the second quarter, Western New Mexico managed only nine points. Teeya Gordon scored on a jumper assisted by Yvanna Villarreal to keep the Mustangs within reach, but CSU Pueblo's defense forced several turnovers that led to fast-break points. By halftime, CSU Pueblo had extended its lead to 43–15.

Offensive struggles continued for Western New Mexico in the third quarter, as they converted just one of 14 field goal attempts. Gordon contributed four free throws and led rebounding efforts, but the team could not convert offensive rebounds into points. The ThunderWolves increased their advantage with fast-break scores and finished the third period ahead 60–22.

The Mustangs started the fourth quarter with layups from Natalie Magallnes and Villarreal but were unable to sustain momentum. CSU Pueblo responded quickly with more fast-break plays and a three-pointer from Dasani Nesbit. Kimble added two free throws late in the game, but Western New Mexico could not narrow the gap before time expired.

Gordon led Western New Mexico with eight points and seven rebounds while collecting two steals. Kimble scored six points and grabbed three rebounds. Villarreal recorded three assists along with four rebounds, while Khalaf added four points, five rebounds, and two assists.

For CSU Pueblo, Seneya Martinez contributed 11 points along with three blocks and three steals; she also distributed five assists. Genesis Sweetwine led all scorers with 12 points on efficient shooting (5-for-7) and provided four assists. Ruby Sweeney-Spitzeck recorded six assists and two steals; Dasani Nesbit had two blocks, two steals, and six assists; Laci Roffle added 11 points plus six rebounds.

With this loss, Western New Mexico's overall record stands at 0-6 this season. The team's next matchup is scheduled against St. Mary's on Thursday, December 4 in San Antonio, Texas.
