The New Mexico Health Care Authority has announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for behavioral health regions across the state. The initiative aims to provide up to $26 million in funding to expand mental health and addiction services. This funding will address critical shortages in four areas: residential treatment, crisis care, medication-assisted treatment for justice-involved individuals, and prenatal and perinatal substance use disorder programs.
Behavioral health regions have until December 19, 2025, to apply for this funding. The NOFO allows these regions to submit Early Access Regional Plan proposals, facilitating immediate investment while developing long-term plans. Award announcements are expected during the week of January 26, 2026.
"This important funding means that our communities don’t have to wait to get help," said Kari Armijo, cabinet secretary for the Health Care Authority. "We have the opportunity to get resources to people in crisis now."
The funding is part of Senate Bill 3, which received bipartisan support during the 2025 legislative session. Each region must designate an accountable entity to apply on its behalf. Kristie Brooks, director of Behavioral Health Transformation and Innovation, emphasized the importance of addressing current needs: "We’re asking: How can we support what New Mexicans need today? This funding bridges the gap while regions build their comprehensive multi-year plans."
Applications can be submitted at https://newmexicohsd.bonfirehub.com/opportunities/208928 by the deadline. The Behavioral Health Services Division will host two Zoom Q&A sessions on November 7 and November 19 for further guidance.
