The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has introduced a new initiative to promote the use of Mobile IDs among businesses in the state. The Mobile ID Reader Loaner Program offers businesses the opportunity to borrow Tap2iD readers, which are age verification terminals, at no cost. This move aims to increase the acceptance of Mobile IDs across New Mexico.
"New Mexico was at the forefront of states that adopted Mobile IDs. The public response has been excellent, and MVD is now ramping up resources that help businesses accept Mobile IDs," said Htet Wint, Director of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. He emphasized that Mobile IDs offer convenience while ensuring privacy and security.
The Tap2iD readers employ secure cryptography to verify age on a Mobile ID. They also confirm that the photo displayed matches the individual presenting the ID. Among the first participants in this program are the New Mexico Wine Association and Happy Accidents, a bar located in Albuquerque.
Christopher Goblet, Executive Director of New Mexico Wine, expressed enthusiasm about participating in the program: "New Mexico Wine is thrilled to be the first participating business in the MVD's Mobile ID Reader Loaner Program." He noted that although wine has historical significance in New Mexico as part of its long-standing grape-growing tradition, embracing technology like Mobile IDs demonstrates that this sector remains modern and dynamic.
The program allows customization of minimum age requirements through an online management portal called Verify with Credence. This feature makes it easier for various businesses, including dispensaries or venues offering senior perks, to adopt Mobile ID verification.
Since adopting Mobile IDs in 2024, New Mexico has joined 16 other states offering this service. A comprehensive list of these states and TSA checkpoints accepting Mobile IDs at airports can be accessed online. Additional details on how to download or accept Mobile IDs are available on MVD’s website.
