Western New Mexico University's women's basketball team suffered a 106-40 defeat against New Mexico Highlands University at the Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, NM. The Mustangs, now 0-2 for the season, struggled with turnovers and offensive execution throughout the game.
The Cowgirls established an early lead in the first quarter, with Kamalani Anitielu hitting a three-pointer less than a minute into play. Western New Mexico managed only one field goal in the opening period and committed nine turnovers, allowing New Mexico Highlands to finish the quarter ahead 23-4.
In the second quarter, Western New Mexico showed some improvement as Natalie Magallnes made a three-pointer and Teeya Gordon contributed points in the paint. However, continued turnovers—11 in that quarter alone—allowed the Cowgirls to maintain their advantage. By halftime, New Mexico Highlands led 52-21.
The third quarter saw Brelee Nichols score from both free throws and beyond the arc for Western New Mexico. Despite these efforts, turnovers persisted and allowed New Mexico Highlands to outscore their opponents 28-12 during this period.
New Mexico Highlands continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter with strong shooting performances and capitalizing on Mustang mistakes. Western New Mexico managed only three field goals in this final period.
Teeya Gordon led Western New Mexico with 14 points and four rebounds. Brelee Nichols added seven points and four rebounds while Natalie Magallnes recorded two steals and two assists. Alexandra Gonzales contributed four points along with five rebounds.
For New Mexico Highlands, Kapiolani Anitielu scored 21 points with five steals; Aniya Johnson added 16 points; Aspen Salazar had 14 points—including six perfect free throws—and five assists; Kamalani Anitielu finished with 14 points and two blocks; Kimora McClure recorded four steals.
Western New Mexico will next face New Mexico Highlands again on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Drag's Court in Silver City, NM.
