A paper cutout named Flat Franklin, inspired by the Flat Stanley school project, recently visited the New Mexico State Library as part of a nationwide educational initiative. The project, originating from a 1964 children's book by Jeff Brown, involves students sending a paper figure to various locations across the United States to learn about geography and improve writing skills.

Flat Franklin was sent by a fifth-grade class in San Jose, California. Before arriving in New Mexico, he had already visited Alaska, Virginia, and Hawaii. The class aims for Flat Franklin to travel to all 50 states by April.

During his stop at the New Mexico State Library, staff took a photo of Flat Franklin with "Little Ben," another figure at the library. A postcard featuring information about Santa Fe and facts about New Mexico was then mailed back to the students. Following his visit in New Mexico, Flat Franklin continued his journey to Northern Arizona University in Yuma and is scheduled next for the Temple of Justice in Olympia, Washington.
