The New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has allocated $3 million to enhance animal shelter facilities in 25 local governments across the state. This funding aims to improve care and services for cats and dogs in these communities. The DFA used a scoring system that assessed project readiness, scope, and development phase to evaluate applications. Projects with urgent needs for facility improvements were given priority.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham approved House Bill 113 on April 8, which created the New Mexico Animal Welfare Program. This program provides a framework for ongoing state support of initiatives focused on the care and sheltering of cats and dogs.
Local entities receiving funds include the cities of Aztec, Bayard, Belen, Clovis, Deming, Española, Farmington, Gallup, Grants, Las Cruces, Lovington, Portales, Raton, Roswell, Santa Rosa, Socorro, Tucumcari; Otero County; San Felipe Pueblo; Santa Clara Pueblo; Santo Domingo Pueblo; Torrance County; Valencia County; Village of Santa Clara; and Village of Tularosa.
