The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department has issued a warning about a mail fraud scheme targeting residents. The fraudulent letters claim that property may be seized if overdue debts are not paid to a specified +800 number. The department emphasizes that all official correspondence will have an official letterhead and include details on any actions taken by the recipient, further steps required, and available remedies.
To verify the authenticity of any communication, individuals can use the secure Taxpayer Access Point at https://tap.state.nm.us/Tap. Additionally, the department may contact individuals with overdue payments by phone after sending collection letters. To confirm they are speaking with an agency representative, recipients can verify a prior letter ID or call the department’s call center directly.
Residents are urged to report suspicious mail to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division via email at Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or by calling 1-866-457-6789. In cases where threats are made, local law enforcement should be contacted. For further inquiries, the department's call center is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1-866-285-2996.
