The New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department has issued a warning to the public about text message scams. The department emphasizes that it will never send text messages demanding payments or requesting personal information related to tax or motor vehicle issues. Reports of such scam messages have surfaced in New Mexico and other states.
Individuals who receive suspicious text messages are urged to report them by emailing the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division at Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789. In cases where threats are made, local law enforcement should be contacted.
The department clarifies that it only contacts individuals by phone for overdue taxes after sending collection letters. To verify communication from the agency, recipients can confirm a prior letter ID with the caller or directly contact the department’s call center.
For those uncertain about communications allegedly from the department, it is advised to use the secure Taxpayer Access Point at https://tap.state.nm.us/Tap. The official website, https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/, provides access to this service under Online Services and then Taxpayer Access Point TAP.
Official letters from the department include a letterhead and details on necessary actions or available remedies. For further inquiries, individuals can reach out to the call center at 1-866-2996, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
