Approximately 23,882 families in New Mexico have yet to claim $10.7 million in child tax credits for the years 2023 and 2024. The New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department had previously informed families who appeared eligible for at least $100 in child tax credits but had not claimed them. Since this notification, 7,334 new and amended returns have been filed, resulting in $3.7 million being distributed to taxpayers.

To qualify for the child tax credit, individuals must be residents of New Mexico with qualifying children and cannot be dependents themselves. The credit per child varies from $25 to $622 based on income levels.

"New Mexico’s child tax credit helps eradicate child poverty by putting money back in the pockets of families with children. We want every family eligible to claim the credits they’re owed," said Stephanie Schardin Clarke, Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department.

Taxpayers can file or amend their returns without charge through the secure Taxpayer Access Point website at https://tap.state.nm.us. Additional information about the New Mexico Child Tax Credit and Personal Income Tax is available online. For further assistance, individuals can visit the department's contact page at https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/contact-us/ or call 1-866-285-2996.

The New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department provides fair and efficient tax services across more than 35 programs, distributing revenue to state, local, and tribal governments throughout New Mexico.
