Celebrated poet Manuel González has been appointed as the third New Mexico State Poet Laureate. The appointment, effective immediately, was made by New Mexico Arts and the New Mexico State Library, both divisions of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. This recognition highlights González's significant contributions to literary arts and his impact on communities across New Mexico.
González, who served as Albuquerque Poet Laureate from 2016 to 2018, is known for his commitment to community and justice. He expressed his gratitude for the appointment: "I’m honored and humbled to be named the next New Mexico State Poet Laureate. Poetry has been medicine in my life, helping me heal, remember, and reconnect with my family, my community, and my ancestors."
During his three-year term, González aims to promote poetry throughout the state by visiting schools, libraries, pueblos, and plazas. He plans to create spaces where all voices can be heard and celebrated. His work over two decades spans poetry, education, and social change. As a teacher at the Native American Community Academy, he uses culturally grounded curricula to empower Indigenous and Chicano youth.
Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Cultural Affairs said: "Manuel González is not only a poet of great skill; he is a steward of New Mexico’s living culture." She added that his leadership will inspire people across ages in New Mexico.
In his role as State Poet Laureate, González will lead poetry initiatives statewide and serve as an ambassador for New Mexico’s literary traditions through public readings and workshops.
