Albuquerque International Sunport begins repaving main terminal roadway ahead of holiday travel

Travelers using the Albuquerque International Sunport during the upcoming holiday season will encounter improved road conditions, as Albuquerque Asphalt has started repaving the Sunport Loop. This main roadway serves passengers at the terminal and is being resurfaced from I-25 eastbound through the terminal loop and back to University Blvd. The project is funded by $1.9 million from the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“This road is one of the first that people see when they visit Albuquerque, and now it’ll give the kind of first impression we want,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Repaving this stretch of Sunport, and any other road, is driven by data that helps us make sure key routes get the right attention when they need it.”

The Sunport Loop handles a high volume of daily traffic despite its short length and was identified as needing rehabilitation. Construction crews aim to finish repaving by November 20, ahead of increased travel for the holidays.

“Repaving the roadways along Sunport Boulevard is a key investment in both the customer experience and the long-term infrastructure of the Sunport,” said Manny Manriquez, Acting Director of Aviation. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we complete these improvements, which will help us better serve New Mexico for many years to come.”

In 2024, there were 157,619 takeoffs and landings at Albuquerque International Sunport—an average of 431 per day—and more than 114 million metric tons of cargo moved through its facilities in fiscal year 2024. The airport manages air cargo operations for companies such as Amazon Air, FedEx, and UPS.

Owned and operated by Albuquerque’s Aviation Department, Albuquerque International Sunport is New Mexico’s largest commercial airport. It serves over 5.5 million passengers annually with nonstop flights to 32 destinations via seven major carriers, three cargo carriers, and one commuter airline.
