Western New Mexico University's volleyball team achieved a 3-0 sweep over Cameron University on Thursday evening at Drag's Court in Silver City. The Mustangs improved their record to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while Cameron fell to 6-16 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
The Mustangs opened the first set with five consecutive points, featuring kills from Daphne Posthumus and Jayden Hughes, supported by assists from Hannah Haggard and Jayla McDuffie. Despite efforts by Cameron to close the gap, Western New Mexico maintained control through consistent scoring and capitalizing on opponent errors. The set ended with a 25-18 win for the home team.
In the second set, Western New Mexico continued its momentum, starting with a kill by Posthumus that sparked a 4-0 run. Brynlee Barris contributed back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 10-2. Although Cameron narrowed the margin late in the set, Western New Mexico held firm. Posthumus delivered another decisive kill to secure a 25-22 victory.
Cameron led early in the third set but was overtaken after Western New Mexico rallied from a 7-2 deficit. A service ace from McDuffie tied the score at 13-all, followed by blocks from Jade Rampton and Posthumus that pushed the Mustangs ahead. Posthumus closed out both the set (25-21) and match with her final kill.
Posthumus led all players with 18 kills on 26 attempts for a .654 hitting percentage and added three blocks. Hughes finished with 13 kills and eight digs while Haggard tallied 26 assists along with one service ace. Mikelle McAfee contributed defensively with 12 digs.
For Cameron, Kayla Quintana posted two kills on two attempts for a perfect hitting percentage of 1.000, adding eleven assists. Anastasija Andelic recorded sixteen digs along with eight kills and two block assists; Jennifer Valdez added nine kills, four digs, and two block assists for eleven total points.
The Mustangs will host Oklahoma Christian next at Drag's Court on October 25 at noon.
