Restored 1929 Harvey Car | New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs
A restored 1929 Cadillac 341-B, originally from the Harvey Company, will be displayed at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe from October 25 to November 9, 2025. This pop-up exhibit is part of the Fred Harvey History Weekend in November. The car, on loan from Xanterra Travel, was part of Major Hunter Clarkson and Fred Harvey's "Indian Detours," a tour service that operated from 1926 to the mid-1930s. These tours helped promote Native American arts and crafts and popularized the Southwest as a travel destination.
Billy G. Garrett, Executive Director at New Mexico History Museum, expressed gratitude towards Allan Affeldt for suggesting the display and thanked Xanterra for their cooperation. The museum will also host various programs during the Fred Harvey History Weekend from November 7 to 9, including a documentary screening and a discussion by car expert Winslow Bent on November 9 about the history and restoration of the Harvey Car.
Currently housed at Grand Canyon National Park, where Xanterra offers driving excursions of the South Rim, the car will be temporarily moved to Santa Fe for this event. Visitors can also explore exhibitions related to Harvey Company history such as "Setting the Standard" and "Forks in the Road: A Diner’s Guide to New Mexico."
The weekend will feature lectures by Kathleen Dull, Stephen Fried, and descendants of the Harvey family among others. Lectures are scheduled for November 7 and 8 in the museum auditorium with tickets priced at $60 for in-person attendance and $25 for virtual participation.
