New Mexico State University has appointed Joe Fields as its new Director of Athletics, following a comprehensive national search. Fields, who has served as Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer at the University of Tulsa, will assume his new position on October 8.
Fields brings over two decades of experience in college athletics to New Mexico State. His career began as a student-athlete playing football at Syracuse University from 2004 to 2007, where he earned All-Big East Conference honors. He also spent a season with the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
Justin Bannister, chair of the AD search committee and NMSU's chief of staff, expressed confidence in Fields' ability to lead: "Aggie fans are going to love what Joe brings to the table," he said. "He's been a student-athlete and an administrator, so he has unique insight into the full experience of college athletics."
NMSU President Valerio Ferme highlighted Fields' commitment to student-athletes' academic and personal development: "Joe Fields is first and foremost devoted to the overall excellence of our student-athletes," Ferme said. "He brings integrity and humility to the role."
Fields shared his enthusiasm for joining New Mexico State: "I'm honored that President Ferme has selected me to serve as the next Director of Athletics at New Mexico State University," he said. "The future is bright for NMSU, and my family and I are thrilled to become part of the Aggie community."
During his tenure at Tulsa, Fields managed daily operations amid significant changes in college sports. He also held roles at Texas A&M University, where he restructured their Center for Student-Athlete Services leading to record-breaking academic achievements.
Fields holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from Syracuse University. Details about a press conference introducing him will be announced soon by New Mexico State Athletics.
