Rep. Block: 'ICE agents in other states are being forced to conceal their identities' for safety

John Block, a representative from New Mexico, expressed concerns over rhetoric comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), describing it as reckless and potentially endangering federal officers' families. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

"When I heard that, my ears shot up," said JOHN BLOCK, New Mexico State Representative for 51st District (R). "ICE agents in other states are being forced to conceal their identities because their families' lives are being threatened. They're doing their jobs—despite NM Dems' attempts to sabotage at every turn—and now get equated to the Klan."

At a September 2025 hearing of the New Mexico Legislature’s Courts, Corrections, and Justice Committee, Democratic lawmakers drew comparisons between ICE and the KKK, which sparked backlash from Republican members. Representative Eleanor Chávez characterized ICE's actions as akin to those of the KKK, while Senator Joseph Cervantes remarked that nighttime raids were reminiscent of tactics not seen since "the KKK days." GOP leaders criticized these comments as inflammatory and dangerous.

Threats against ICE personnel have been on the rise, highlighted by a shooting incident in September 2025 at an ICE facility in Dallas. During this attack, a gunman targeted agents, injuring several individuals and leaving behind notes with anti-ICE sentiments. Ammunition found at the scene was marked "ANTI-ICE," leading federal authorities to bolster security measures at ICE offices nationwide. This incident underscored the growing risks faced by ICE staff amid increasing hostility.

In March 2025, ICE officers conducted arrests across Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Roswell in New Mexico, detaining 48 individuals—20 of whom had prior criminal charges or convictions. These operations are notable in New Mexico due to its smaller immigrant population compared to larger states. The sweep illustrated how federal authorities occasionally intensify resources in border regions.

John Block has represented District 51 in the New Mexico House since January 2023 after securing victory in the 2022 election. Prior to his political career, he founded and edited The Piñon Post, a conservative news outlet, and worked within political media circles. His legislative focus includes energy, education, and conservative priorities that align with his district's base.
