After more than two decades of anticipation, the Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site is set to open as New Mexico's eighth Historic Site on November 8, 2025. The site, which highlights the birth and growth of New Mexico’s borderlands and features a collection of folk art, will host a Grand Opening Fiesta with a ribbon cutting and live music on the Mesilla Plaza.

The event is organized by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA), New Mexico Historic Sites (NMHS), and the Friends of Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site. Anne McCudden, Executive Director of New Mexico Historic Sites, expressed pride in sharing this cultural asset with both locals and visitors. "Through tremendous dedication and care from a team of staff, museum and preservation experts, volunteers, and consultants, we are proud to now share this cultural gem with New Mexicans and visitors alike," she said.

The historic site consists of three buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places: two storefronts and a large residence. These buildings were once home to J. Paul Taylor, a former New Mexico legislator, educator, community leader, and his wife Mary Daniels Taylor, an award-winning photographer and writer. The Taylors lived there for over 70 years and amassed a significant collection of fine art from local artists as well as international folk art. They donated their home to the state in 2003 for it to become part of NMHS after their passing.

NMDCA Cabinet Secretary Debra Garcia y Griego commented on the site's significance: "Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site offers a truly authentic experience for both community members and visitors to learn about the history of Mesilla as a center of political, commercial, and social activity through time." She added that they are excited to fully open the site following years of preparation.

Heather Pollard, President of the Friends of the Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site, said that they have been honored to support preservation efforts at the site. More information about its history can be found at nmhistoricsites.org/taylor-mesilla.

New Mexico Historic Sites is part of NMDCA under the Museum of New Mexico Board's leadership. The system was established in 1931 for preserving scientific resources in New Mexico. It includes sites like Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner and Coronado among others.
