El Palacio magazine will host an author event on September 28, 2025, at FUSION | 708 in Albuquerque. The event will feature writers from the magazine’s fall issue who will discuss significant moments and cultural traditions from New Mexico's history.

David Correia, a historian, is set to speak about the Gallup Coal Wars of 1933–1935. This period was marked by conflict between striking miners and industrial leaders, which had lasting effects on the state.

Petra Salazar will reflect on Española’s centennial year. She plans to share stories about lowrider culture, the annual pilgrimage to Chimayó, and longstanding traditions of generosity within her hometown.

University of New Mexico professors José Rivera, Levi Romero, and Enrique Lamadrid will discuss the role of molinitos—gristmills—in village life during the Spanish Colonial era. Their presentation will connect themes of food production, labor, and community heritage.

The event is free and open to all attendees. After the readings, there will be a Q&A session with the authors. Attendees can also purchase copies of El Palacio as well as books by fall contributors Daisy Atterbury and Chelsey Johnson.

Emily Withnall, editor of El Palacio magazine, will host the afternoon. “For more than a century, El Palacio, the official magazine of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, has celebrated the people, places, and stories that define New Mexico. To read past articles visit elpalacio.org,” Withnall said.

El Palacio has served as an official publication highlighting New Mexico’s diverse history for over one hundred years through its coverage of people and events across the state (https://elpalacio.org).
