Lovelace Westside Hospital pioneers use of Titan SGS™ Stapler in New Mexico

Lovelace Westside Hospital in Albuquerque has become the first in New Mexico to perform a sleeve gastrectomy using the Titan SGS Stapler. This new technology aims to treat severe obesity and related conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea. Dr. Benedict Hui, a bariatric surgeon with Lovelace Medical Group, conducted the procedure.

The Titan SGS Stapler allows for a single, continuous staple line which results in quicker procedures and shorter hospital stays. It also reduces post-surgical symptoms such as nausea and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Dr. Hui expressed pride in bringing this technology to Lovelace, noting its benefits for patient health and quality of life.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a common weight loss surgery that involves removing 80% of the stomach to limit food intake. The Titan SGS Stapler decreases stapling time by 90% compared to traditional methods and enables patients to return home within 24 hours after surgery.

Sherry Aragon, interim CEO of Lovelace Westside Hospital, highlighted the hospital's commitment to providing advanced care: "LWSH is proud to be the only hospital in the state of New Mexico to currently provide the Titan SGS Stapler for sleeve gastrostomies."

Lovelace Westside Hospital is recognized as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Bariatric Surgery and holds accreditation from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
