Deb Haaland, U.S. Secretary of the Interior and former U.S. Representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district, recently addressed economic and social issues facing New Mexicans in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).
On September 4, 2025, Haaland emphasized her commitment to community engagement and advocacy, stating, "New Mexicans are fired up and ready for change. Every person has a role to play in our communities, and I'm ready to fight fiercely for our neighbors, families, and friends so they can be proud to call New Mexico home."
The following day, she criticized the economic policies of "MAGA Republicans," writing on September 5, "MAGA Republicans are hurting our economy - prices are skyrocketing and unemployment rates are climbing. I’m fighting for an economy that works for every New Mexican by creating jobs, lowering costs, and putting people first." This message highlights ongoing concerns about inflation and joblessness in the state.
Later on September 5, Haaland turned attention to food insecurity in New Mexico: "Thousands of New Mexicans rely on food banks to feed their families. No New Mexican should ever go hungry, but Trump's cuts to SNAP and food banks will only make hunger worse. We can all do our part to help. @RoadrunnerFoodbank has great ways to get involved and help our" She referenced cuts made under the Trump administration to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and food bank funding—policies which have been debated as contributing factors to rising hunger rates.
As Secretary of the Interior since March 2021, Deb Haaland is recognized as the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. She continues to advocate for social programs and economic reforms impacting her home state of New Mexico.
