In a post dated August 28, 2025, Haaland expressed concern over school safety and gun violence: "Our kids are relying on us to do better. We’re failing them. Their lives & safety should always be our priority — right now, it’s clearly not. I’m heartbroken we have to continue praying for families who lost their babies in school, for children and teachers with gun wounds in".
Later that day, she referenced the anniversary of a historic civil rights event: "62 years ago, the March on Washington called for jobs, justice & freedom. This fierce mission still guides us today. Like so many New Mexicans, I’ve struggled to get by—that’s why as governor I’ll fight for good schools, affordable healthcare & safe communities where every family" (August 28, 2025).
In an additional post on the same date, Haaland emphasized her commitment to rural communities in New Mexico: "Every corner of New Mexico matters. When I met with folks in Reserve, it was clear they need a fierce fighter to lift up their communities. I'm ready to take on the fight for rural communities as your next governor." (August 28, 2025).
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place on August 28, 1963. It was one of the largest rallies for human rights in United States history and is remembered for Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.
