On August 25, 2025, Haaland described her interactions with residents in Clovis, New Mexico. She wrote: "New Mexicans are eager for change. The people of Clovis and I exchanged ideas about how to increase healthcare in rural communities, improve our schools, and many issues New Mexicans care about. Later that day, she paid tribute to Willie Marquez in a post dated August 26: "Willie Marquez was a kind soul and a dear friend. I’m heartbroken to hear of his sudden passing. He consistently stepped up to drive our parade floats and put up signs in our communities - a proud Democrat who showed us all the way to selfless action. Sending my love and prayers".
