A detective from the 377th Security Forces Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base has completed a three-week detective academy hosted by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD). The training is part of an effort to improve investigative skills and build stronger partnerships between military and local law enforcement agencies.

Detective Joel Rinderknecht, who previously served as an APD officer and is also an Air Force veteran, participated in the academy alongside officers from several area police departments. These included Bernalillo, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, Estancia, and Sandia Pueblo.

The program was organized through cooperation between APD and the Security Forces Squadron, led by Lt. Col. Juan Cabrera. The curriculum focused on advanced investigative topics such as warrant writing, search and seizure procedures, forensic technology use, and preparing for courtroom testimony. It also highlighted collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office and the use of modern resources in solving cases.

Michael Gardiner, APD Deputy Commander, stated: “The detective academy is a critical step in an officer’s career development, giving them the tools to improve their investigative skills for their future casework. Our partners in other agencies receive the same great training, including advanced interviewing techniques that align with our values in treating the community with respect and taking crime seriously.”

Lt. Col. Cabrera expressed interest in expanding joint training efforts beyond this initial collaboration. He mentioned plans to introduce bike patrol certifications for Security Forces personnel through APD to broaden their operational capabilities and increase engagement with the community.

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce expressed support for this partnership between Kirtland Air Force Base and APD, noting that it will help both organizations work together to ensure public safety.
