Doug Majewski Downtown Transformation BIG Chair Hartman+Majewski Design Group | Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce
The Downtown Transformation Bold Issues Group (BIG) held its first meeting of the program year on August 7, focusing on key projects aimed at revitalizing Albuquerque’s downtown area. The group, led by Doug Majewski and vice chair Tom Briones, discussed ongoing efforts and progress in several areas.
William Keleher provided an update on the Business Improvement District (BID), describing it as a central part of the downtown transformation strategy. He explained that work continues to secure enough property owner support to petition the City Council for approval of the BID.
Terry Brunner, director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency, shared developments regarding The Rail Trail project. Brunner noted that design for the Sawmill Rail Trail section is complete and construction is ahead of schedule with Jaynes Corporation leading the effort. Funding has been secured for two miles of what will eventually be a seven-mile trail. Brunner said he plans to seek additional development funding from the state Legislature and stated that this request would have full support from the Chamber.
Brunner also addressed progress on Tax Increment Financing (TIFF), which is currently under review by the New Mexico Tax and Revenue Department as it establishes criteria for fund appropriations. According to Brunner, “The TIFF is significant because it will serve as a catalyst for attracting increased capital investment to Downtown.” He added that similar mechanisms were used successfully in other parts of Albuquerque such as Mesa Del Sol and Uptown.
The group plans to continue advocacy efforts in coming months and expects to meet again soon.
