The University of New Mexico is collaborating with Brown University and other institutions on a new national research institute dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence. The initiative, funded by a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation, will focus on developing AI assistants that are more intuitive, trustworthy, and sensitive to context in their interactions with people.
AI chatbots are already being used by companies in mental and behavioral health settings. The project aims to ensure that future AI assistants can respond in ways that are respectful and oriented toward human needs.
"Ensuring the next generation of AI assistants can respond in respectful, human-oriented ways is of the utmost importance," according to organizers.
