The Museum of New Mexico Press has received nominations for three of its books in the Southwest Book Design Awards. "The New Mexicans: 1981-83," which documents photographer Kevin Bubriski’s two-year stay in New Mexico, is a finalist in the photography category. Don J. Usner, a New Mexico photographer and author, described it as "a gift to New Mexicans, holding up a mirror for us to see ourselves back in the day."

Two other titles have been recognized in the art category. "Horizons: Weaving Between the Lines with Diné Textiles" features discussions by leading Diné weavers, scholars, and visual artists on historic textiles and contemporary artworks. The publication primarily showcases pieces from the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture's collections.

Also nominated is "Printing the Spirit: Gustave Baumann’s Santos," which revives an unpublished project by Gustave Baumann. This book includes drawings of bultos, retablos, original Baumann proofs, and new perspectives by Santa Fe authors Thomas Leech and Carmella Padilla.

All three books were designed by David Skolkin, who served as Art and Production Director for nearly thirty years until his retirement in 2024. MNMP Director Erin Adair-Hodges praised Skolkin's contributions: "David Skolkin’s fine work has been at the heart of the Museum of New Mexico press for years, and we’re excited that his work for these books has been so well received."

The Southwest Book Design Awards aim to elevate book design standards across the region. Winners will be announced at the New Mexico Book Association Summer Gala on August 21, 2025.

The Museum of New Mexico Press was founded in 1951 and specializes in publishing books that reflect the culture of the Southwest.
