Gabriella Rivera has been appointed as the head coach and spirit coordinator for the University of New Mexico's cheer, dance, and mascot programs. This announcement was made by Fernando Lovo, Vice President and Director of Athletics. Rivera, who has coached the coed cheer team at New Mexico for five seasons, is a 2018 graduate of the university and brings over 11 years of experience in leading spirit programs.

"It is an incredible honor to serve as the next head coach and spirit coordinator of the UNM spirit program," said Rivera. She expressed gratitude towards Fernando Lovo, Madison Baumann, Ryan Berryman, and Jalen Dominguez for their trust in her abilities. "My goal is to lead this program with integrity, firsthand insight, and purpose—fostering a culture where student-athletes feel supported, valued, and proud to represent Lobo Nation."

Rivera also thanked mentors Rafael Martinez and Debbie Perry for their guidance throughout her career. Her experience includes routine structure expertise and choreography skills aimed at creating engaging performances. Under her leadership, UNM's coed squad achieved notable rankings in national competitions.

Before joining UNM in 2020, Rivera served as varsity cheer head coach at Hope Christian High School in Albuquerque. She began her coaching career with Royal Cheer Academy and Cheer Central Suns.

"We’re excited to welcome Gabriella as the new head coach," said Lovo. He highlighted her background as a former UNM cheerleader and praised her understanding of UNM Athletics. "I’m confident that she will bring dynamic game day experiences for our fans."

Rivera holds a Bachelor of Science degree in signed language interpreting from UNM.
