The Fort Stanton Historic Site will host a Town Hall meeting on April 12, 2025, to discuss its fire mitigation and historic landscape restoration project. The event will take place from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the site located at 104 Kit Carson Road, Fort Stanton, NM.
Dr. Oliver Horn, Regional Manager of Lincoln and Fort Stanton, along with Matthew Barbour, Deputy Director of New Mexico Historic Sites, will lead the presentation. They will address the fire threat posed by combustible trees such as Piñon-junipers and Siberian Elms that have transformed the grassland since the site's founding in 1855.
The presentation aims to inform the public about how these changes over the past 170 years have increased fire risks. It will also cover details of Fort Stanton's current FEMA-funded project designed to protect the historic site from wildfires while restoring its landscape.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide input regarding the project. Those unable to attend in person can watch a livestream via a Zoom webinar at https://nm-gov.zoom.us/j/86758966413?pwd=YwakYTY6WC7WIdffgoBEnYatWijZt5.1.
