Albuquerque Reads is seeking donations to support its students and volunteer tutors as the school year comes to a close. The program aims to provide kindergarten and first-grade students with tote bags filled with books and other items to encourage continued reading over the summer.

The Chamber of Commerce, which partners with Albuquerque Public Schools for this initiative, plans to include educational coupons or giveaways from local businesses in these tote bags. They are calling on businesses interested in contributing items such as restaurant coupons, school supplies, crafting materials, or reusable shopping bags.

Program Director Kayla Nelson is available for those who wish to support the program by contacting her at [email protected] or (505) 843-7323.

Albuquerque Reads focuses on improving literacy skills among young students, a critical factor in academic success. Research indicates that children who cannot read at grade level by third grade are significantly more likely to drop out of high school. The program has shown consistent results in enhancing student reading levels throughout the school year.

The pandemic has exacerbated educational disparities, particularly affecting economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students in New Mexico. Albuquerque Reads addresses these gaps by providing one-on-one tutoring sessions for 90 minutes each week at three Title I elementary schools. Tutors use a curriculum designed and supervised by teachers to enhance reading and writing skills.

For over two decades, Albuquerque Reads has been committed to boosting literacy through direct engagement with students and supplying them with books for home practice.
