Today, the New Mexico Senate addressed several key issues, including state financial investment, public safety, and broadband expansion. This session coincided with Climate Crisis Day and New Mexico Historic Women Marker Day at the Roundhouse.
A significant focus was on enhancing support for universal telecommunications. Senate Bill 126, sponsored by Senator Michael Padilla from Albuquerque, aims to increase funding for the State Rural Universal Service Fund’s Broadband Program. The bill seeks to improve broadband access in rural and underserved areas of New Mexico. Senator Padilla emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in broadband expansion efforts, stating, "New Mexico is a leader in broadband expansion efforts, and it’s important that we keep our momentum going. Senate Bill 126 gives state agencies the resources they need to implement their plans to get affordable, reliable internet access to every corner of our vast state."
Other legislative actions included the passage of Senate Bill 100 concerning the indebtedness limit of Arroyo Flood Control with a unanimous vote of 37-0. Additionally, Senate Bill 70/a addressing racketeering crimes passed with a vote of 38-0.
The annual Hoops4Hope charity basketball game between the Senate Lobos and House Aggies was canceled due to weather concerns. The event supports the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
