New Mexico Senate discusses climate change legislation

Today, the New Mexico Senate focused on Climate Crisis Day and New Mexico Historic Women Marker Day. The session included discussions on state financial investment, public safety, and broadband expansion.

Senate Bill 83, known as the Innovation in State Government Fund, was a significant topic of discussion. Sponsored by Senate Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart and Senator Heather Berghmans, both from Albuquerque, the bill aims to provide resources for state agencies to address climate change. It proposes creating a dedicated fund to help agencies reduce pollution and protect New Mexico's environment.

The bill suggests establishing a non-reverting fund in the State Treasury with an initial ten million dollars from the General Fund. This fund would support state agencies in achieving net-zero emissions and implementing sustainable economic policies.

"We can either give our state the tools to tackle climate challenges head-on, or we can keep playing catch-up while New Mexicans pay the price in droughts, floods, fires, and rising costs," said Senate Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart. "Senate Bill 83 ensures that state agencies have the capacity to take action—whether it’s reducing harmful pollution, modernizing infrastructure, or making sure that every community, urban and rural alike, has the tools to remain resilient and economically strong."
