Business on the New Mexico Senate Floor resumed Monday morning with an opening performance by Taos High School’s Mariachi El Tigre in honor of Taos County Day.
The Senate confirmed two key appointments. Melanie Kenderdine was unanimously approved as Secretary of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department with a vote of 31-0. Kenderdine has an extensive background in energy, having led the MIT Energy Initiative and served in both the Clinton and Obama administrations. "When industry experts and federal regulators work with Secretary Kenderdine, they know they are working with a nationally renowned leader in natural resource management," said Senate Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart (D-Albuquerque). She added, "New Mexico is immensely fortunate to have Secretary Kenderdine at the helm during this crucial moment in determining our climate future."
Elizabeth "Liz" Anderson was also confirmed unanimously as the 25th State Engineer of New Mexico. With over 25 years of experience in civil and environmental engineering, Anderson has been involved in water resources management across various sectors. She most recently served as Senior Advisor to the State Engineer and is now the first woman to hold this position. During her confirmation hearing, Anderson remarked, "It's important to me to be a good neighbor to the states we share stream systems with, and most importantly to stand up for New Mexico’s needs." She emphasized her commitment to maintaining a skilled workforce at the Office of State Engineer and Interstate Stream Commission.
