The Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee has advanced two significant bills aimed at enhancing New Mexico's economic development. Senate Bill 169, known as the Strategic Economic Development Site Readiness Act, sponsored by Sen. Michael Padilla and Rep. Meredith Dixon, received unanimous support with a 9-0 vote to move forward to the Senate Finance Committee.
Another bill, Senate Bill 170, which addresses NMFA Definitions, Funds and Rates for Economic Development, is also backed by Padilla and Dixon along with Reps. Joshua N. Hernandez and Joy Garratt. This bill passed with a 7-2 vote and will proceed to the same committee with amendments.
D'Val Westphal from the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce expressed support for both bills: “SB 169 is all about increasing the number of sites ready for business development.” Regarding SB 170, she noted it would encourage investment in future projects through public utilities recovering costs.
Senator Padilla emphasized the need for ready sites to sell in New Mexico: “The primary objective of this legislation is to enhance the state’s economic development strategy.”
Meanwhile, House Bill 259 proposes increased fees and fines on oil and gas violations but faces opposition due to its potential impact on the industry. Terri Cole from the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce opposed it: “The fee and fine increases are pretty staggering.”
House Bill 91 seeks relief for low-income utility ratepayers by allowing lower rates or other programs approved by the Public Regulation Commission. It passed a committee vote of 7-4.
In another legislative move, House Bill 287 aims to update laws concerning crimes involving telephones, texts, and social media. The bill received unanimous approval in committee.
Lastly, House Bill 160 passed overwhelmingly in the House. It requires drivers to stop for "other on-track equipment" at railroad crossings alongside trains.
