New Mexico Senate committee approves climate measures amid opposition

On February 8, 2025, the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico (IPANM), along with the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA) and the New Mexico Business Coalition, expressed strong opposition to Senate Bills 48 and 49. These bills propose allocating $340 million annually from taxpayer funds to support programs aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The proposed legislation includes initiatives to "promote the state's economy by fostering economic development opportunities unrelated to fossil fuel development," encourage "projects that reduce the use of combustion engine vehicles," and "promote the reuse and recycling of materials in a sustainable manner and transition New Mexico away from dependence on the fossil fuel industry."

IPANM has voiced concerns that these bills represent an attempt by the government to influence energy markets by favoring certain energy sources over others. They argue this shift could lead to more expensive and less reliable energy options, disproportionately affecting low-income communities in New Mexico. IPANM also highlighted consumer preferences for affordable gas-powered vehicles at a time when electric vehicles remain unsold across dealership lots in the state.

The association urges citizens to contact Senator Mimi Stewart, who sponsors these bills, advocating against what they describe as subsidized programs that increase costs for New Mexicans without proven effectiveness.

Senate Bills 48 and 49 were approved by the Senate Conservation Committee on February 8, following a party-line vote where all Democratic members supported the bills, while all three Republican members opposed them.

Senator Jim Townsend from Artesia shared his views on social media regarding this legislative move.

For further inquiries or comments regarding these bills, Senator Mimi Stewart can be contacted via her office phone at 986-4734 or through email at mimi.stewart@nmlegis.gov. Correspondence can also be directed to her secretary's email at SD17.secr@nmlegis.gov.
