Sen. Block on education: 'Let's put students first over party and power'

Jay Block, a Senator from New Mexico, has expressed concerns that Democratic opposition is hindering Republican efforts to improve the state's educational system. He called for prioritizing students over party politics in a statement made on X.

"So much for the moon shot," said Jay C Block, New Mexico State Senator from 12th District (R). "We Republicans put forward so many new initiatives to improve schools but they all get shot down by the Democrats....AKA the teachers union. Let's put students first over party and power."

Republican lawmakers in New Mexico have recently proposed initiatives aimed at expanding charter schools and introducing performance-based funding. These proposals have faced resistance from Democratic legislators and teachers' unions. According to Axios, Democrats and the New Mexico Federation of Teachers argue that such policies could divert resources away from traditional public schools and exacerbate educational disparities. They emphasize that increased education spending should focus on strengthening public institutions rather than private ones.

According to WalletHub’s 2024 analysis, New Mexico ranks 49th in overall public school quality despite spending $15,924 per K–12 student, which is above the national average. The state’s relatively low educational outcomes, coupled with mid-level per-student spending, underscore a disconnect between financial investment and academic performance.

New Mexico's education spending per student was $15,924 in 2023, ranking it 35th nationwide. However, as reported by Education Data and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the state continues to rank near the bottom in national student achievement measures. This persistent gap between spending and outcomes highlights challenges in translating investment into classroom success.

According to his official biography and coverage by Wikipedia, Jay C. Block is a Republican New Mexico state senator representing District 12 since 2025. His background includes service as a Sandoval County commissioner and a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Block is known for focusing on education reform and veterans’ issues within the state legislature.
