New Mexico students continue to face challenges in educational performance according to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results. The 2024 report indicates that New Mexico ranks last in key categories: 4th and 8th grade reading, as well as 4th and 8th grade math.

In the category of 4th grade reading, New Mexico scored 201, placing it at the bottom among all states, including Washington D.C. and Department of Defense schools. Alaska followed closely with a score of 202. Similarly, for 8th grade reading, New Mexico's score was 245, again ranking last with Alaska slightly ahead at 246.

For mathematics, the situation is similar. In the area of 4th grade math, New Mexico scored 224 while Alaska had a score of 226. Lastly, in the category of 8th grade math, New Mexico received a score of 256, with West Virginia scoring just above at 261.

These scores reflect ongoing difficulties for New Mexico students since they were also ranked last in these categories in the previous NAEP results from 2022.
