NMBC announces call for action on public safety

The New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) has issued a call for action on public safety, highlighting the need to address the increasing crime rates in New Mexico since the end of the pandemic. This announcement was made in a press release.

According to the NMBC, a lack of legislative and enforcement action has contributed to the rising crime rates, making New Mexico one of the most dangerous states in the nation. The coalition acknowledges Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's recognition of the crime crisis but notes that her administration and some legislators have blocked efforts to pass legislation aimed at addressing these issues while enacting reforms that have contributed to public safety challenges.

The NMBC points to several areas of concern, including lenient parole and pretrial detention policies that allow violent offenders to be released, sanctuary state policies that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, new gun control measures affecting law-abiding citizens, and the removal of qualified immunity for police officers. These factors have led to officer shortages as law enforcement professionals move to other jurisdictions.

"Policies that prioritize leniency and reducing prison populations over offender accountability have left our communities vulnerable," said Carla Sonntag, NMBC President. "It’s time for real solutions that protect New Mexicans and ensure a safer future for our families, businesses, and communities."

The NMBC works to support business growth and prosperity in New Mexico. The organization advocates for business owners' interests with government officials, provides voter education on issues and policies, and aims to bring New Mexicans together through resources and calls to action.
