Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared that New Mexico will join 14 other states in implementing clean-car standards. These standards require new cars sold within the state to produce fewer greenhouse gases and mandate an increasing percentage of zero-emission vehicles.

The announcement was made during Climate Week in New York City, where Governor Lujan Grisham participated in a panel with other U.S. governors discussing proactive climate actions by states amidst federal inactivity.

This decision follows the Trump administration's recent revocation of California's authority to set stricter fuel-efficiency and greenhouse-gas standards than those at the federal level. In response, California, along with nearly two dozen other states, has initiated a lawsuit against the administration's decision.

Camilla Feibelman, executive director of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, issued a statement on this development.
