PNM's recent announcement to provide New Mexico with 100% carbon-free power by 2040 has prompted a response from the Sierra Club. According to the environmental organization, a study conducted in February indicates that a combination of renewable energy sources, battery storage, and energy efficiency measures is the most cost-effective strategy for replacing the electricity generated by the soon-to-be-closed San Juan Generating Station.

The analysis, carried out by Synapse Energy Economics, suggests that an all-clean-energy replacement would be 1.5 percent cheaper through 2036 compared to relying on new gas-fired power plants. The Sierra Club states that this approach could save PNM customers $94 million. This figure does not include potential savings related to improved public health and reduced pollution damages.

Camilla Feibelman, director of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter, can be contacted for further information regarding this statement.
