Nusenda Credit Union President and CEO Joe Christian has announced his retirement effective February 28, 2025, after a 39-year tenure. Christian has been instrumental in transforming Nusenda into New Mexico's largest credit union, with nearly $5 billion in assets, 280,000 members, and 30 branches. Michelle Dearholt, Executive Vice President of Operations, will succeed him.
Christian began his career at Nusenda in 1986 as the Data Processing Manager and held various leadership roles before becoming President and CEO in 2019. "Over my 39-year journey with Nusenda, I've witnessed the transformative power of a financial cooperative," said Christian. He emphasized the credit union's commitment to its members and communities.
Under Christian's leadership, Nusenda expanded its reach by acquiring Western Heritage Bank and introduced technological advancements like its first website. The credit union also enhanced community programs through the Nusenda Foundation.
During his tenure, Nusenda received several accolades including being named a Top Workplace and Best Credit Union by American Banker and USA Today. Christian also served on numerous boards and was recognized for his contributions to the industry.
The Board of Directors chose Michelle Dearholt as Christian’s successor after consulting with DDJ Myers. Dearholt has been with Nusenda for over two decades and holds both a BBA and an MBA from the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management. She is active in community service and has been recognized as a Woman of Influence by Albuquerque Business First.
Ralph Wallace, Nusenda Board Chair, praised Christian's impact: "It’s hard to summarize the impact of Joe’s legacy at Nusenda." Wallace expressed confidence in Dearholt's ability to continue advancing the credit union.
Nusenda Credit Union serves over 275,000 members across New Mexico and West Texas with more than 30 branches.
