Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has put forward her executive budget recommendation for Fiscal Year 2026. The proposal, released today in Santa Fe, aims to build on the achievements of her administration over the past six years. It emphasizes increased investments in healthcare, child welfare, and infrastructure throughout New Mexico.
The proposed budget outlines $10.9 billion in recurring spending, marking a 5.3% increase from the current fiscal year. Included within this plan is an additional $172 million allocated for state employee pay raises, with specific provisions for enhancing compensation for educators in New Mexico.
Governor Lujan Grisham stated that the budget is designed to be fiscally responsible while focusing on key areas such as early childhood education, clean energy, infrastructure development, affordable housing, and expanded access to healthcare. "This fiscally sound budget proposal prioritizes early childhood education, clean energy, infrastructure, affordable housing, and expanded healthcare access to build a stronger foundation for New Mexicans," she said.
The executive recommendation keeps reserves at 30.4%, reflecting a cautious approach to financial planning.
The release of the budget comes well ahead of the start of the New Mexico Legislature session on January 21st. This timing is intended to allow lawmakers and the public ample opportunity to review and discuss its contents before legislative deliberations begin.
"Transparency drives trust," Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized regarding the early release of the budget document. "Our early release of the executive budget ensures everyone has time to review our priorities for New Mexico."
