Sacred Heart Catholic School in Gallup, New Mexico, has been on a path to recovery after facing significant challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent move to a smaller facility in 2021. The school, known as the "Catholic Miracle School," experienced a sharp decline in enrollment and was at risk of closing. However, dedicated staff and families remained committed to maintaining Catholic education in Gallup.
In August 2023, the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist from Ann Arbor, Michigan, answered Bishop James Wall's call for assistance. They took on administrative roles and provided teachers for the struggling school. This partnership has been pivotal in turning around Sacred Heart Catholic School's fortunes.
Since then, enrollment has grown from 43 students in 2023 to 88 for the 2025-2026 academic year. The school recently held its first Legacy Gala fundraiser with 130 attendees from various states including New Mexico, California, Arizona, and Texas. The event raised over $175,000 to establish an endowment fund for tuition assistance.
Sister Thomas Aquinas expressed optimism about the school's future: "The 'Catholic Miracle School' continues to surprise us every day as we continue to work towards vitality and sustainability."
