Rep. John Block has criticized Sen. Martin Heinrich for his stance on charter schools, which Block argues provide essential opportunities for students in New Mexico. Block expressed his views in a December 9 post on X.

"Dude hates giving kids the opportunity to attend charter schools to better their lives and open their horizons," said Block, District 51 NM State Representative. "NM is 50th in education if only counting states, 51st if including DC, and 52nd if including DoD schools. Plus, Marty had his kids educated in Maryland — NOT here."

In the post, Block accused Heinrich of opposing charter schools and claimed that Heinrich "hates giving kids the opportunity to better their lives and open their horizons." He also highlighted that Heinrich's children attend school in Maryland rather than New Mexico, suggesting an inconsistency with Heinrich’s advocacy for improving the state's education system.

Heinrich emphasized the importance of expanding early childhood education, community schools, and work-based learning to ensure universal access. "Our kids in NM are just as capable as kids anywhere in the country when given the opportunity. They just need a fair shot," he said in his own post on X.

According to the 2024 KIDS COUNT Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, New Mexico ranks last in education for the eighth consecutive year. The report notes that 79% of fourth graders in the state are not proficient in reading, and 87% of eighth graders are not proficient in math.

John Block serves as the Representative for New Mexico House District 51 and is also the Editor and Founder of the Piñon Post. His educational background includes an MBA from Eastern New Mexico University and a BA in Business Administration from Rutgers University, as per his LinkedIn profile.
