Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham released a statement on Veterans Day, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices of New Mexico's veterans. "Today, we honor the tremendous sacrifice and commitment of New Mexico’s veterans who have proudly served both our state and nation," she stated.
New Mexico is home to over 140,000 veterans, one of the largest veteran populations in the United States. The governor emphasized the state's dedication to supporting its veterans through various initiatives.
The statement announced the opening of the Taos County Veterans Cemetery. "Today, we proudly celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Taos County Veterans Cemetery," said Gov. Lujan Grisham. The cemetery represents a significant investment by the state, with nearly $7.5 million allocated for its construction.
Gov. Lujan Grisham also addressed financial support measures for veterans in her administration's policies. These include eliminating state taxes on Social Security income for most seniors and exempting up to $30,000 of military retirement benefits from taxation.
Additionally, investments have been made in facilities at the New Mexico State Veterans’ Home to improve care for veterans.
"As we observe Veterans Day, let us take a moment to thank the veterans in our lives," she urged, expressing gratitude for their service and emphasizing their role in protecting freedoms.
