After 24 years of leading the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico, Peter Simonson is stepping down as executive director. Leadership will be transferred to interim executive director Leon Howard. Simonson, who has been at the helm since 2000, has transformed the organization from a small team of three to a significant force for civil rights in New Mexico with over 30 staff members today. He will continue to support ACLU-NM in an advisory role for the next three months and retire at the end of 2024.
"Leading the ACLU of New Mexico has been the privilege of a lifetime," said Simonson. "Over these 24 years, I have witnessed the power of collective action and the deep commitment of our staff, supporters, and communities in the fight for justice. When I started, we were a small team with big dreams, and today we’ve built something far beyond what I could have imagined. Every victory we’ve achieved has been the result of tireless work, collaboration, and an unwavering belief in the principles of justice and freedom. I have immense gratitude for all we have accomplished together, and I will carry these memories and lessons with me forever."
As interim executive director, Leon Howard brings substantial experience and a strong commitment to ACLU of New Mexico’s mission. With nine years at the organization, Howard has held key roles including staff attorney, legal director, and most recently deputy director. Having worked closely with Peter Simonson throughout this leadership transition, Howard's understanding of ACLU-NM’s work uniquely positions him to guide the organization.
"I am honored to take on the role of interim executive director and continue building on the foundation Peter established," Howard said. "His leadership has been transformative, and I am excited to guide ACLU of New Mexico into the future, advancing the fight for civil rights and justice in our state."
Under Simonson’s leadership, ACLU of New Mexico achieved several landmark victories such as winning freedom to marry for same-sex couples, ending “policing for profit,” repealing an abortion ban, holding Albuquerque Police Department accountable for excessive force incidents, and helping pass New Mexico Civil Rights Act.
In his next chapter after retirement at year-end 2024, Simonson plans to write novels, spend more time with family and friends, and enjoy outdoor activities in New Mexico.
The board of directors at ACLU-New Mexico will conduct a formal search process to name a permanent executive director in upcoming months.
