The city of Albuquerque has introduced a new initiative aimed at assisting businesses impacted by vandalism. The Window to Opportunity grant, a collaboration between the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the Economic Development Department’s Small Business Office, seeks to ease the financial strain on small businesses needing to replace or repair damaged windows.

“We stand by our local businesses and are finding new ways to support them,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “For a small business, the cost of vandalism can be devastating, and folks can get back to business sooner.”

The program has allocated $200,000 in total funding. Eligible applicants include brick-and-mortar businesses with 25 or fewer employees, 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) non-profit organizations, and educational entities within Albuquerque's city limits.

The grant covers up to 80% of window replacement or repair costs, with a maximum reimbursement of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 is available for those incorporating environmentally sustainable “green” glass or security glass into their repairs.

“By addressing window damage promptly, we can help ensure that our city remains a safe place for everyone, and a supportive place to do business,” said Senior Economic Developer Frankie Hermosillo. “We are always looking for ways to adapt to the needs of our local business community and get them the help they need.”

To qualify for the grant, incidents must have occurred on or after September 1, 2024. Required documentation includes a police report and time-stamped photos of both damaged and repaired windows. Incidents occurring between July 1, 2024, and August 31, 2024, also qualify if applicants enroll in the APD Business Crime Prevention Security Survey.

Applications can be submitted via the city's website at cabq.gov/windowgrant.
